Postpartum physiotherapy

It is recommended for all postpartum women from 6 weeks to 24 months after childbirth.
Postpartum physiotherapy is a specialized area of rehabilitation focused on helping new mothers recover from the physical challenges that arise after childbirth. The postpartum period can bring a range of issues, including pelvic pain, diastasis recti (separation of abdominal muscles), urinary incontinence, and pelvic floor dysfunction. Many women also experience changes in posture and core strength due to the physical demands of caring for a newborn.
Postpartum physiotherapy aims to address these concerns through tailored exercise programs, manual therapy, and education on body mechanics. By focusing on strengthening the pelvic floor and core muscles, physiotherapists help women regain stability and function, ultimately enhancing their overall well-being.
Additionally, postpartum physiotherapy can provide guidance on safe return to physical activities, including exercise and sports, while considering the unique needs of each individual. This supportive approach not only aids in physical recovery but also promotes mental health by empowering women to reconnect with their bodies and regain confidence. With the right support, new mothers can navigate the postpartum period more comfortably and effectively, paving the way for a healthier transition into motherhood.
Postpartum physiotherapy includes:
- full postural check
- pelvic floor muscle assessment
- abdominal muscle exam to check for any separation
- screening for bladder and bowel dysfunction.
Consult with the physiotherapist if you have any of the following symptoms:
- bulging appearance of the stomach, especially at the midline – „mommy pooch“
- you see a separation of your abdominals
- discomfort around your C-section scar
- urinary leakage while coughing, sneezing, running, etc
- sudden urge to urinate
- bowel incontinence
- hip, pelvis or back pain
